Manufacturer library review

Revit Family & BIM Library Audit for Manufacturers

A technical review of the Revit families your company already distributes: geometry, parameters, type structure, placement, and scheduling data.

For technical, product, and BIM managers reviewing heavy files, broken configurations, or inconsistent product ranges. You receive findings for the agreed files and tests, with priorities for repair, optimization, or rebuilding.

Request an initial library assessment

Start with 1–3 representative Revit families. Agree the scope of a paid audit before work begins.

When to review an existing library

Consider a review before updating a library assembled by different suppliers or extended over several catalog revisions. Start with the files that cause problems or represent the main family structures in your range.

Heavy files, too much detail

Large RFA files, dense imported geometry, or repeated nested components warrant a closer look at what the product needs to show.

Options that do not behave reliably

Changing a dimension, finish, or mounting option breaks geometry or creates combinations the product cannot offer.

Product data that will not schedule

Inconsistent parameters, categories, or type structures make product codes and technical data hard to retrieve.

Inconsistent updates

Related products use different parameter names, finish controls, or type conventions, making changes difficult to apply consistently.

What DG BIM checks

We agree which checks apply, the Revit version, and the files and configurations to test. Your cut sheets and product data provide the reference; missing or conflicting information is recorded for your team to resolve.

Geometry & file-size efficiency

Review imported geometry, hidden detail, nesting, repeated components, and material assets. Record file sizes and identify where simplification could reduce weight while retaining product dimensions and useful detail.

Parameters & formulas

Check naming, units, parameter types, shared parameters, type/instance choices, formula dependencies, and exposed controls. Test agreed size limits and option combinations for broken constraints or invalid configurations.

Family/type architecture & Type Catalogs

Review categories, templates, nested/shared families, type naming, and the division of a range into files and types. Check Type Catalog names, headers, units, values, and loading against the accompanying RFA files and product codes.

Materials & visual representation

Review finish controls and material naming, subcategories, detail levels, visibility settings, and symbolic lines. Inspect plan, elevation, section, and 3D views for consistency and appropriate representation.

Hosting, insertion & project data

Test placement, origin, reference planes, orientation, host requirements, and agreed flip/rotation behaviour in a test project. Check that schedules and tags expose the intended product codes, dimensions, options, and technical values.

Range consistency, IFC & classification

Compare related families for common naming, parameter definitions, units, finishes, and SKU logic. Where required, review classification fields and test IFC mapping/export against an agreed use case and target configuration.

QA and flex testing

We flex agreed types, dimensions, and option combinations; check warnings and geometry; and review placement, schedules, and graphical output. Findings record the file, tested configuration, observed issue, and steps to reproduce it. Untested types and families remain outside the audit conclusions.

SAFE: Streamlined, Accurate, File-size Efficient

Streamlined

Review family/type structure, exposed controls, and naming conventions. Identify duplication and unnecessary complexity.

Accurate

Compare dimensions, available configurations, and scheduled values with your approved product information.

File-size Efficient

Record file sizes and identify geometry or assets that could be simplified. Any proposed reduction must retain the agreed dimensions, representation, and behaviour.

Measured optimization work

Furniture Product Library Optimization

For an Australian furniture manufacturer, DG BIM selectively simplified, rebuilt, and reorganized eight SketchUp product models while preserving dimensions and visual character.

Eight SketchUp models · combined file size

~124 MB → ~10.7 MB

91.4% smaller overall

These figures describe the SketchUp batch in the linked case study. They do not predict a reduction for a Revit library; that depends on its geometry, data, and required behaviour.

What the paid audit delivers

Before work begins, we confirm the fee, timing, files, tests, and report format. The audit documents observed issues and recommended actions. Repairs and rebuilding are quoted separately.

01

Document the findings

A record of reviewed files, tested configurations, observed issues, and supporting examples or screenshots.

02

Prioritize the work

Recommendations ranked by their effect on product accuracy, usability, maintenance, and file efficiency.

03

Choose the repair strategy

Identify content to retain, optimize, restructure, or rebuild. Agree a representative repair prototype and wider rollout separately.

Where unsuitable production geometry calls for reconstruction, our CAD to Revit family service helps determine what to retain, simplify or rebuild.

Work directly with Diego Gomes, architect and BIM specialist, who has worked with Revit and BIM since 2010. The audit sits within our Revit / BIM content service. For new lighting content, see Revit families for lighting manufacturers.

Questions about a library audit

What is a manufacturer Revit family audit?

A manufacturer Revit family audit reviews existing product content for geometry efficiency, parameter logic, family structure, placement, representation, and product data. DG BIM tests an agreed sample or library scope and recommends targeted fixes, optimization, or rebuilding.

Can DG BIM audit families made by another supplier?

Yes. DG BIM can review existing RFA files and their associated Type Catalogs, lookup tables, and product documentation. Findings are limited to the supplied files and configurations included in the agreed tests.

Is a smaller Revit file always a better family?

No. File size is one measure of efficiency. A smaller family still needs accurate dimensions, reliable parameters, appropriate visual detail, and usable product data. DG BIM reviews file weight together with behaviour and intended project use; there is no universal size target for every product.

What is the difference between an initial assessment and a paid audit?

The initial assessment uses 1–3 representative families to understand the library, reported problems, and likely review scope. A paid audit is an agreed technical examination with documented findings and recommendations. Its coverage, deliverables, fee, and timing are confirmed before work begins.

Does the audit include fixing or rebuilding the families?

The audit produces findings and a prioritized recommendation for each reviewed issue. Optimization, repairs, rebuilding, and rollout across the full library are scoped separately. This lets your team decide which changes are worth implementing before committing to production.

Does a sample audit validate the whole BIM library?

A sample audit establishes findings for the files and configurations actually tested. It can reveal patterns worth investigating across the range, but it does not certify untested families. DG BIM records the sample scope and recommends any broader checks needed.

Can the audit cover IFC, classification, and Revit versions?

Yes, when included in the agreed scope. Provide the required Revit version, classification system, export configuration, and intended recipient workflow. IFC and classification checks are assessed against those requirements rather than treated as a blanket interoperability guarantee.

Start with 1–3 representative Revit families.

Send DG BIM a typical family, a problematic example, and, if useful, a more complex product. Include the Revit version, relevant Type Catalogs or lookup tables, a cut sheet, and a short description of what is not working.
